Armed policemen from the Edo State Police Command have arrested Pa Joseph Iduoriyekemwen, 90, father of Mr. Mathew Iduoriyekemwen, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) senatorial candidate for Edo South in the 2027 general elections.
According to a close family source, Pa Iduoriyekemwen was whisked away by the policemen, who claimed to have acted on the orders of the Edo State Police Commissioner at about 4am from his residence in Amagba, suburban Benin City, Edo State.
According to the source, the security agents, who refused to disclose his offence reportedly took him to an undisclosed location, where he was held.
Speaking on her mobile phone, the Edo State Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem however stated that the senior Iduoriyekemwen was arrested over allegations of violence, gun running and disturbance of the peace of Amagba community in suburban Benin City.
Ikoedem, an assistant superintendent of police, said that the arrest was sequel to a petition last month to the police by some aggrieved persons in Amagba, who pointedly accused the nonagenarian of having a hand in several misdeeds in the community.
The Edo Police spokesperson confirmed that Pa duoriyekemwen was picked up in the wee hours of today (October 6, 2026) by detectives from the State Police headquarters over the petition and released after interrogation.
Ikoedem said: "It is true that Pa Joseph Iduoriyekemwen was arrested early this morning by policemen from the state headquarters but has since been released after interrogation.
"The Command earlier received a petition against Pa Joseph Iduoriyekemen JP, in connection with allegations bordering on conspiracy, forcible entry, gun running, cultism and promoting communal crises.
She continued: "Pa Joseph was invited to the station where he has made useful statements and has since been released to go home while further investigation continues. The command has arrested two other suspects in connection with these allegations as the matter is currently under going in-depth investigation."
