In a move which may not be unconnected with the feud  between The Speaker of the Eso State House of Assembly, Mr. Blessing Agbebaku Monday in Benin City reigned from office in a move which sources say may not be unconnected with a raging feud between him and an influential aide to Governor Monday Okpebholo.

In place of Mr. Agbebaku, who stands suspended pending the outcome of investigations of financial improreity and poor leadership against him, is Mr. Yekini Idiaye from Akoko Edo Constituency I.

The ex-speaker was slammed with an indefinite suspension following his resignation from office over allegations of corruption and poor leadership.

Mr. ‎Agbebaku from Owan West Constituency  resigned  during plenary, shortly after reports emerged of a plot by lawmakers to Kickstart impeachment proceedings against him,

‎The immediate past speaker, formerly of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was elected as speaker during ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki's tenure in 2020 but defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), shortly after the inauguration of incumbent Governor Monday Okpebholo in 2024.

‎Speaking shortly after his inauguration, Mr. Idiaye pointedly accused the former speaker of inflating the cost of procuring a Lexus 570 and Toyota Hilux Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV), boring that the allegations would be thoroughly investigated.

‎The new speaker defended the move, insisting that the change of leadership was necessary to restore effective legislative business in the state.

‎He alleged that efforts by lawmakers to address the leadership challenges under Agbebaku were repeatedly rebuffed, resulting in prolonged adjournments and the inability of the House to effectively conduct legislative business.

Idiaye emphasized: "Parliament is about law-making, not a place of social meeting where only one decides when to sit or not to sit as presently practised."
