Citing Invitation, Recognition Accorded Suspended NLC Chairman, Textile Workers Dissolve Edo Executive, Suspend Union Activities

The National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has ordered the immediate dissolution of the Comrade Decency Ochie led Edo State chapter of the association and the indefinite suspension of all union activities until further notice. 

A letter dated July 20, 2026, explained that the decision to axe Comrade Ochie and other members of the union was due to the invitation and recognition accorded to the supposed chairman of Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) by Comrade Ochei.

The letter which was signed by Comrade Ali Baba, the general secretary of NUTGTWN accused Comrade Ochei of committing the offence at a seminar he jointly organized with the illegal state executive council of the congress in the Edo State capital on 16th July, 2026. 

Comrade Baba wrote that the action of the suspended chairman was vexing considering the fact he was fully aware of the dissolution of Edo NLC and a caretaker committee set up in place, to which all affiliates are expected to accord recognition and allegiance. 

The scribe said that the decision to descend on the Edo State chapter was taken at a meeting of the National Administrative Council of the union on Saturday, 18 July, 2026 after an extensive deliberation on the widely reported seminar which was tagged "Secretaries Forum Workshop".

He wrote: "NAC observed with grave concern that despite serious warning and clear directive from the national secretariat, you deliberately invited 

and accorded recognition to the individual claiming to be the chairman Edo NLC, whereas you are fully aware that the Edo NLC has a caretaker committee to which all affiliates are expected to accord recognition and allegiance. 

"Your action constitutes a clear act of insubordination, disregard for the directives of the nation and conduct capable of bringing the name and reputation of the union to disrepute.

"Such actions are inconsistent with the principles of discipline, unity and collective responsibility that guide our union as a respected affiliate of the NLC."

Titled "Dissolution of the State Executive Committee And Indefinite Suspension of Union Activities in Edo State", the letter added that no officer or member of the dissolved executive committee shall represent or act on behalf of the union in Edo State or any capacity pending further directive from the national secretariat.
