A former deputy chairman of the Edo State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Clement Ben Edo_Osagie has saluted members of the pro-democracy group, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) for the courageous and fearless role they played in restoring democracy in the country after many years of military dictatorship.
In a message on the occasion of the June 12 Democracy Day, Hon. Edo Osagie congratulated all the martyrs and heroes of democracy who sacrificed their lives, energies and resources to restore Nigeria to civilian administration.
A founding member of the PDP, the politician remarked that 27 years of unhindered democracy has, no doubt, restored the hope and confidence of Nigerians for a brighter future.
He said: "I will like to congratulate all the heroes of democracy and those who sacrificed their lives, energies and resources to restore Nigeria to civilian administration after many years of military incursion in politics."
Hon. Edo Osagie, who represented Ovia Federal Constituency at the Constitutional Conference of 1995 said that Nigeria democracy has passed through different stages of electoral amendments and several constitutional reviews to ensure its stability.
The grassroots politician recalled that the tortuous journey to restore democracy resulted in the incarceration of many heroes of democracy especially editors of major national dailies, who were jailed for daring to criticize prolonged military rule in the country and the proscription of many newspapers and magazines.
He added: "Twenty six years down the line, democracy is thriving without any interference by the military whose constitutional responsibilities are to defend the territorial integrity of the country."
Sounding upbeat, Hon. Edo Osagie said that the gains from the fledging democracy in the country range from the transformation of critical sectors of the nation's economy to the construction of roads, improved infrastructure, enhanced health care delivery and overhauling of the nation's security architecture.
He expressed hope that the present chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Joash Amupitan will conduct a transparent, free, fair and credible elections come 2027
