Relief from exorbitant transport fares seems to be on the way for Edo travelers following the purchase of 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses by the state government.
The Commissioner for Communication and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, who disclosed this Tuesday in Benin City at a press briefing on the activities of the government disclosed that the Governor Monday Okpebholo led administration has also concluded arrangement for 50 more of the 52-seater buses for a total of 100.
Flanked by Mr. Desmond Agbama, the Permanent Secretary, Communication and Strategy, Prince Afegbua said that the buses would soon be deployed across the three senatorial districts of South, Central and North to ease the burden of transportation confronting Edo people.
The commissioner who was however silent on the mode of distribution across the state, however assured that when deployed the buses will ease the burden of transportation and minimize the hassles people go through whenever they travel.
He added: “We are expecting 50 more of these buses, and our target is 100 units of the 52-seater buses, which would help reduce transportation difficulties and improve mobility across the state."
Speaking against the backdrop of the recent fatal shooting of a student of a University of Benin (UNIBEN) at the main gate of the institution by suspected fraudsters otherwise refered to as Yahoo boys, Prince Afegbua reiterated the determination Governor Okpebholo administration to intensify the tempo of crusade against cultists and internet fraudsters.
The commissioner explained that going by investigations, the deceased, whose name was simply given as Alexander, a 200 level student of Political Science had just finished his first semester examination and was cruising along in his sports utility vehicle when the assassins in hot pursuit, traced him to the gate and shot him dead in a hail of bullets.
He said: “Following the incident, the state Governor, Monday Okpebholo, vowed that his government will leave no stone unturned to apprehend the perpetrators.
“The unrelenting war the state government has been waging against suspected cultists, they appear to be hiding under the umbrella of internet fraudsters to perpetrate their nefarious activities."
He continued: “It is also part of what we are talking about when it comes to the issue of youths engaging in Yahoo Yahoo business, cultism, and what have you. A young man who went to write his exam, we were told, was affected."
He reiterated the administration's zero tolerance for cultism, insisting that no amount of persuasion will take the government's eyes off the decision.
Worried by the upsurge in the activities of cultists, who hide under the auspices and umbrellas of Yahoo Yahoo to commit havoc, Prince Afegbua said that the government will soon take a firm stand by way of zero tolerance for Yahoo boys in the state.
He declared: “We may not have provided answers to all the nagging problems of cultism, but people will bear witness that Edo has been peaceful to a large extent."
