Nigerian Canadian Obasogie Sets to Make History, Runs For Toronto City Council

A Nigerian Canadian Ms Nekpen Obasogie is poised to make history as the first African to be elected as City Councillor in Toronto, Canada.

Ms Obasogie had on Friday May 8, 2026 submitted her nomination forms to run for City Councillor in Toronto's York South-Weston (Ward 5) in the forthcoming municipal election. 

Speaking shortly after the submission, she reiterated her determination to represent the council and making positive contributions that affect the lives of the constituents.

Ms Obasogie said: "I am committed to representing our community and making positive changes that matter to residents."

The Canada-based Nigerian writer is the recipient of Edo State chapter of the Association of Nigerian authors (ANA) honorary Pen Award

and author of several books including the author of "Great Benin: The Alcazar of Post-Colonial Culture", "The Life of Princess Adesuwa"amongst others. 

The Benin cultural ambassador is also the founder of NEBO TV, an online television station and has largely succeeded in carving a niche for herself as one of the custodians of the rich Benin cultural heritage in the diaspora and Nigeria through her writings.

Ms Obasogie is the owner of Idia House Art Gallery in Brampton, Toronto, one of its kind in the North American country, housing some fascinating, sophisticated, and highly priced Benin bronzes and two extra-large Idia masks worth millions of dollars.
