Authorities of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have requested all duly admitted students of the university to return to their respective departments/faculties, including the Faculty of Optometry, to present themselves for clearance.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire explained that some students offered provisional admission in the 2025/2026 academic session are having difficulties in clearance in some faculties, particularly in Optometry.
Mrs. Ehanire who frowned at the development explained that the authorities have requested all duly admitted students to return to their respective departments/faculties including Faculty of Optometry, to present themselves for clearance.
Recalled that some students have angrily complained that out of 350 admitted into the Doctor of Optometry programme for the 2025/2026 session, 200 have been informed that they can no longer be admitted into the department.
According to them, the university made a sudden U-turn, maintaining that it can only keep 150 students because of quota and accreditation issues, and that the remaining students would be transferred to other departments.
One of the affected students, who would not want her name in print lamented that many of them are deliberately being refused clearance, noting that examination will start in March.
She said: "We received admission letters into Optometry from the university and JAMB, paid acceptance fees for Optometry, resumed school in November, started lectures, and now four months into the session, the university is suddenly saying they can only keep 150 students."
