More criticisms have continued to trail Tuesday's shooting by some unknown gunmen at the uptown Benin City, City, Edo State residence of former Governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie Oyegun during a meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The latest is from a member of the House of Representatives for Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Constituency, Edo State Hon. Murphy Omoruyi and top member of the budding opposition party.

The attackers reportedly opened fire, leaving vehicles riddled with bullets and property worth millions of Naira damaged, in what observers describe as a suspected assassination attempt on former presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi and other dignitaries present.

In a statement in Benin City, Hon. Omoruyi described the attack as “a direct assault on democracy and a dangerous escalation of political intolerance,” noting that the violence was not just aimed at individuals but at the very foundation of Nigeria’s democratic values.

He said: “This is not just an attack on Mr. Peter Obi or Chief Odigie-Oyegun; it is an attack on Nigeria’s democratic values. Political differences must never degenerate into violence."

He urged the police and other relevant security agencies to launch a thorough and transparent investigation, ensuring that those behind the attack are swiftly brought to justice.

The Reps member passionately appealed to political stakeholders nationwide to embrace peace and dialogue, warning that unchecked acts of intimidation could erode public confidence in the system ahead of future elections.

The police in Edo State have confirmed the shooting but are however yet to come out with a comprehensive details of the attack.
