At World Anaesthesia Day in UBTH, Prof. Ize-Iyamu Commends Anaesthesiologists For Critical Role in Health Emergencies

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu has commended anaesthesiologists for their crucial roles in the effective management of health emergencies. 

Prof. IIze-Iyamu, who spoke Thursday in Benin City during a visit by officials of the  Department of Anaesthesia, UBTH as part of activities marking the 2025 World Anaesthesia Day lauded the Anaesthesiology department for its vital contributions to the hospital's emergency response efforts. 

Represented by Prof. Stanley Okugbo, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), the CMD emphasized the significance of the World Anaesthesia Day, stressing that it provided a platform to showcase the department's crucial role in the broader healthcare system and also allowed for greater public awareness.

The CMD, who highlighted the expertise and dedication of anaesthesiologists to patients' care.noted that as one of the high-performing specialties in UBTH,  they are essential to virtually all clinical departments.

She reiterated the hospital's commitment to supporting the department in its mission to provide quality anaesthesia services to patients.

Earlier, Dr. Omajuwa Dawodu, who represented the department, noted that the theme of this year’s celebration “Anaesthesiology in Health Emergencies.” was apt.

Dr. Dawodu further reiterated the department’s full support for Prof. Ize-Iyamu, and her management team, expressing appreciation for their continuous encouragement and commitment to improving patient care.

Highlights of the 2025 World Anaesthesia Day include sensitization programmes at the UBTH Staff School, where pupils were taught basic life-saving skills to apply during emergencies, as well as awareness campaigns and public lectures held in different outpatient clinics in the hospital.
