Making good its threat not to stand idly by over the ongoing two-week warning strike by the Academic Staff Union Universities (ASUU), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has scheduled an emergency meeting at its secretariat in Abuja on Monday, October 20, 2025. to deliberate on the next line of action.

In a letter by the president, Comrade Joe Ajaero and titled "Letter of Invitation to an Emergency Meeting", he wrote that the commencement of the warning strike by university teachers and the ultimatums issued by most of its affiliate unions to the federal government is a direct consequence of it's persistent refusal to honour collectively bargained agreements.

The letter was addressed to all presidents and general secretaries of ASUU, Non-academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Universities (SANU) and other universities' unions.

Comrade Ajaero said that in line with our declaration of full solidarity with ASUU and all unions in the sector, and the urgent need to develop a comprehensive and unified strategy, the NLC decided to schedule the emergency meeting.

The president emphasized that the "No Work, No Pay" policy of the government cannot resolve the issues but compliance with negotiated agreements.

Comrade Ajaero added: "The government must know that there's a converse; "No Pay, No Work" stance."Comrade Ajaero continued: "The struggle for the survival of our territory institutions is a fight for the soul of our nation and we can no longer afford to have our unions stand alone. It's therefore imperative that your union is represented at this meeting."

Recalled that aggrieved members of ASUU had last Monday commenced a two-week nationwide warning strike action to kick against poor salaries, refusal by government to honour past agreements, pathetic state of infrastructure in public universities and other sundry issues.
