Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu has assured residents of the areas affected by gully erosion and mudslide in Jattu-Uzairue, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, that he will put up a comprehensive report of the assessment to Governor Godwin Obaseki for immediate relief intervention to cushion effects of the menace.
Comrade Philip Shaibu who spoke during an on-the-spot assessment visit to affected areas in the community and environs appealed to the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency, come to the aid of the people to avoid further destruction of livelihoods and properties.
Thousands of people living along Jattu-Ibie Road and other neighborhoods in the town were recently displaced by rampaging flood water, mudslide and erosion which swept away their houses following a heavy downpour.
Shaibu was accompanied by the Vice Chairman of Etsako West, Mr. Benjamin Ojato, Parish Priest of St. Philip-Neri Catholic Church and Rector of St. Philip Nursery/Primary and Secondary School, Jattu, Rev. Jude Amune, Rev. David John Oshioke, as well as the Councillor representing ward eleven, Etsako West, Mr. Okwilegue Omoruaye Valentine and affected victims of the gully erosion menace.
The deputy governor appealed to the people in the area not to "engage in activities that will worsen the already deplorable situation".
Comrade Shaibu and his team inspected other erosion sites around the area, starting from St Philip Cemetery to the site where over 100 houses were swept away by the devastating erosion menace that ravaged the community recently.
He commiserated with the people whose houses were submerged and described the situation as very bad and sad.
The Edo State number two citizen assured that "the state and federal government will do everything within their reach to bring succour to the people".
