All is now set for the West Africa Football Union-B (WAFU-B) qualifiers for Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) 2023 Women’s Champions League which is scheduled to hold between August 20 and September 2, 2023 at the main bowl of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
Ahead of tomorrow kick off, the qualifiers were reshuffled due to fresh draws at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Friday following the political crisis in Republic of Niger, leading to the withdrawal of AS Garde National of Nigér.
The representatives of six teams from Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso, Benin Republic, and Cote d’Ivoire were on ground at the ceremony and are expected to participate in the 2023 qualifiers.
At the new draw for the two weeks soccer fiesta, three teams in two groups from West Africa were paired against each other for the coveted sole ticket available to the sub-region.
Going by the new arrangement, the participating teams grouped into two distinct groups, each consisting of three teams. Only the top two teams of each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
Nigeria’s champions, Delta Queens of Asaba will play in Group A alongside USFA of Burkina Faso and Sam Nelly FC of Benin Republic,while Group B has the trio of Ampem Darkoa of Ghana, Atletico of Cote D'Ivoire, and Friends of the World FC of Togo.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the ceremony, the WAFU B Director of Competition, Mr. Bailley Sergei explained that the new draws were aimed at meeting CAF requirements of three teams in a group.
Mr. Sergei added that draws for the qualifiers were earlier conducted in Morocco before the withdrawal of the Nigerién side.
