Suspected daredevil assassins fatally shot the wife of a pastor of a pentecostal church in Benin on Monday, August 14 in the night.

The man of God who was identified as Rev. Dr. Samuel Chinyereugo, and his wife, Mrs. Peace Chinyereugo of God’s Vineyard of Grace Dominion Assembly in Upper Lawani Street, New Benin, Benin City were right inside the church when the three man assassins struck.

During the brazen assault which happened at about 7.36 pm, the personal assistant to Rev. Chinyereugo sustained  injuries on his head.

According to sources, the heavily armed gunmen reportedly trailed the cleric who drove in company of his wife to the church where they struck just as they pulled over in front of the church.

Continuing, the source explained that some members of the congregation which included the assistant pastor were outside the church relaxing and chatting after finishing rehearsal for a program scheduled later in August when the cleric and his ill-fated wife dropped by.

A worried Rev. Chinyereugo was said to have confided in the church members as soon as he arrived that he was not too comfortable with a vehicle which drove behind him all the way to the church from the Government Reserved Area (GRA), where he had visited his friend.

He had hardly finished expressing his worries when the vehicle suddenly drove past him at top speed and parked in his front, right inside the church's compound.

According to the source, one of the three men inside the vehicle who jumped out in a commando like style when their vehicle screeched to a halt, suddenly accosted the man of God, plucking the cross pendant on his necklace just as the two other assailants released a deafening volley of hot bullets from behind.

In the ensuing bedlam, Mrs. Chinyereugo was fatally shot and died a few hours later from the injuries at an undisclosed hospital where she was rushed while the shell shocked husband and his aide were resuscitated and discharged.

Coagulated blood stains, the shattered windscreen of the pastor's vehicle and pieces of broken glasses which littered the floor, begging for clean up, could still be seen on Wednesday morning at the church's premises, which is still under lock and key.

Deeply saddened by the killing, sympathisers, mainly members of the church who refused to give the mobile phone number of the deeply distressed clergyman, were seen milling around the church premises and mumbling.

The Edo State Police spokesman, Mr. Chidi Nwabuzor explained that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have commenced full-scale investigations into the shooting to unmask and prosecute the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

It would be recalled that six aides of Apostle Johnson Suleiman, a charismatic clergyman and founder of Omega Fire Ministries were killed on October 21, 2022 during a deadly attack on his convoy  by gunmen at Auchi, the political and commercial headquarters of Edo North.
