As a mark of respect for the slain Kegite chief, a palm wine socal drinking club, who was gruesomely murdered on Monday night right inside his room in the hall of residence, authorities of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) declared Tuesday 4th April, 2023 lecture free day.
Desmond Rukevwe popularly known as Mayor, a final year undergraduate student of Public Administration of the school was gunned down in a hail of bullets by a lone gunman who reportedly shot him thrice on the head before he vamoosed under the cover of darkness.
A statement by the school's spokesperson, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire appealed to members of the university community to remain calm as efforts are being intensified to ensure the safety of staff and students while security agencies are investigating the sad incident
Dr. Ehanire mourned, praying God to comfort the family and colleagues of the deceased undergraduate student and to grant his soul peaceful rest.
Meanwhile, friends and mates have taken to Facebook and other social media to mourn the deceased student from Delta State, a resident of the popular Hall Three, where he was fatally shot.
Under a photograph of a grinning Desmond, holding a calabash with palm wine inside on his Facebook page, some friends who were at loss why he was fatally shot, described him as a jolly good guy while others queried the lax security at the main campus at Ugbowo which resulted in the culprit fleeing easily across the fence after the deed.
Picqued by the ease at which the assailant escaped, a Facebook user, Enebi Enebi wrote: "No security whatsoever but if it’s to raid students by 6 am to seize hot plates, dem sabi that one."
So sad
